Reach, a mechanic introduced on Giant Spider and its many friends, was only keyworded after it existed on a couple dozen cards.įlying as a mechanic went from “this card can’t be blocked except by other creatures with flying” to “this card can’t be blocked except by other creatures with flying or reach.” Portal: Three Kingdoms¸ being a one-off starter set, didn’t have any creatures specifically designed to counter horsemanship. The most notable difference between horsemanship and flying is the existence of reach. But just like with flying, creatures with horsemanship can still block creatures without it. ![]() Horsemanship is basically flying when playing strictly with Portal: Three Kingdoms cards.Ĭreatures with horsemanship can’t be blocked except by other creatures with horsemanship. Given that Portal: Three Kingdoms was a starter set not intended to be played with other Magic sets at the time, it was designed to be played in a microcosm. The set designers still wanted access to a keyword that provided evasion and so horsemanship was born. One of the hallmark cards of the set, Zodiac Dragon, is one of only nine dragons that doesn’t have and can’t naturally get flying. In an effort to keep a level of historical accuracy, horsemanship replaced one of the more common keywords in Magic: flying. ![]() ![]() It was only released in East Asian markets and Australia and, like Arabian Nights before it, was based on a historical period in human history: the Three Kingdoms era.
